Ted Lang, a strength and conditioning specialist with more than 20 years of experience, believes neck exercises can help prevent concussions.
Lang shared his beliefs in a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel story, noting how both the University of Memphis and Texas Tech University reduced concussions when the schools adopted a program of neck-strengthening exercises.
Lang has developed his own program called “Neck Strategies and Spinal Stabilization,” which features maneuvers for isometric stretching, partner stretching, spinal stabilization and neck strengthening.
It is based at least in part on a biomechanical concept, which suggests cervical neck strength, when increased, maximizes force absorption and thus translates into less jarring of the brain.
