Decision to Keep Alex Smith on Bench Could Impact Whether Players Come Clean on Concussions

So San Francisco 49er Quarterback Alex Smith, an established starter in the NFL, suffers a concussion and sits out a few games as he should as part of the NFL’s concussion policy.

Ready to return this week, Smith is informed Wednesday night by Coach Jim Harbaugh that he will continue to sit on the bench, replaced by backup Colin Kaepernick, who has played well in relief.

Hall of Fame Quarterback Steve Young, when discussing the decision on ESPN, worried how the decision to keep Smith in the bench “will play in the lockerroom,” where players may be even more hesitant to come clean about suffering a concussion, since they could lose their job.
