Concussion-Related Research Findings to be Unveiled in Phoenix Today

The National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment (www.nocsae.org) will hold its semi-annual meeting today in Phoenix to review new research in the field of sports related concussions and to award new research grants.

Research presentations will include:

  • Dr. Rick Greenwald, Associate Professor at Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth College and Executive Director at The National Institute for Sports Science and Safety. Dr. Greenwald will present research describing brain tissue response from concussion using special MRI techniques and computer modeling of brain tissue.
  • Dr. Blaine Hoshizaki, Professor at the University of Ottawa, School of Human Kinetics and Director of the Neurotrauma Impact Science Laboratory. Dr. Hoshizaki will present research that focused on developing a repeatable method to test helmets for specific forces known to cause concussions.
  • Mr. David Halstead, Laboratory Director of the University of Tennessee Sports Biomechanics Impact Research Lab and Principal Scientist with the University’s Engineering Institute for Injury and Trauma Prevention in the College of Engineering, and Director of SIRC, an internationally accredited helmet impact testing laboratory, will present the results of research evaluating the relationship between high rotational force in concussions with low linear impact forces.
