Minnesota lawmakers are reportedly pushing the Mayo Clinic to release medical records that they believe will show that New York Yankees legend Lou Gehrig’s death was due to repeated concussions.
Fox News, which reported the story said Mayo Clinic officials are “skeptical of the lawmakers’ theory and are not sure the disclosure would be conclusive anyway” with regard to the records of Gehrig, who died in 1941 at the age of 37.
The official cause of death for Gehrig was attributed to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, a debilitating neurological disease now commonly described as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
But Gehrig reportedly suffered several concussions during a college football career at Columbia University.
Many medical experts have suggested that there is no medical connection between ALS and concussions.
The point may be moot as well since there are no living relatives to approve the release of the records and Gehrig’s remains were cremated.
Noting that Gehrig was a strong supporter of ALS research, who submitted to several experiments, one spokesperson said he believes the ballplayer known as the “Iron Horse” would have been fine with releasing the records.
