Sports Legacy Institute To Honor Jim McMahon with Benefit Dinner in Chicago June 18

The Sports Legacy Institute – a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the study, treatment, and prevention of the effects of brain trauma in athletes and other at-risk groups – will honor Chicago Bears legend Jim McMahon at a benefit dinner in Chicago. The SLI is honoring McMahon “for his courage to go public with his symptoms of early-onset dementia likely due to concussions he suffered in the NFL.”

The dinner takes place on Wednesday, June 18, from 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM at the Union League Chicago (65 W. Jackson Blvd., Chicago, IL). Hosted by Rob Johnson of CBS Chicago, the evening will also feature broadcasting great Bob Costas, recently returned from the Sochi Olympics, and Jim’s teammate Gary Fencik from the Super Bowl XX champion team.

Funds raised will benefit SLI research and the Chicago Concussion Coalition, an SLI-led initiative that coordinates with a network of 30+ national athletic, health, and social service organizations united under a common mission to work in partnership to provide student-athletes in the greater Chicago area with the best resources available to protect them from concussions and recurring injuries. The CCC has provided concussion training to every Chicago Public Schools coach, nurse, and PE teacher, and provides free concussion education to children through service chapters at DePaul University and Illinois College of Optometry. Members of the SLI Chicago Advisory Board include Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins, former Bear Hunter Hillenmeyer, William Daley Jr., and Dr. Leonard Messner of the Illinois Eye Institute, as well as other prominent Chicagoans.
