Journalist Looks at the NFL and Growing Recognition of the Medical Benefits of Marijuana

Influential Associated Press journalist Eddie Pells recently wrote a piece that touched on the challenges the NFL faces with regarding to the growing acceptance of Marijuana use, especially as researchers uncover the drug’s “possible benefits for concussions.”

The article quoted retired NFL defensive lineman Marvin Washington, who said: “It’s not, ‘let’s go smoke a joint. It’s, ‘what if you could take something that helps you heal faster from a concussion, that prevents your equilibrium from being off for two weeks and your eyesight for being off for four weeks?'”file0001845888789

Pells noted that Washington, who is part of the concussion lawsuit, “is working with a bio-pharmaceutical and phyto-medical company called KannaLife Sciences that recently received licensing from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to develop a drug to treat concussions using derivatives from medical marijuana.”

He went on to note the NFL’s sluggish reaction as far as recognizing the positive benefits of the drug.

“The league s threshold for a positive test remains 10 times lower than that of WADA, which changed its limit last year in a nod to the reality that the drug is not a performance enhancer,” he wrote.
