The Carthage Central School District in New York state adopted a concussion policy last month, which requires that staff members who oversee physical activity and health matters be trained to identify signs of a concussion.
The district’s policy impacts physical education teachers, coaches and nurses.
Athletic Director Stephen J. Nolan told the Watertown Daily Times that the new policy calls for the creation of a concussion management team (CMT), which includes himself, the student athlete’s coach and the school health office, that will determine when the athlete will be allowed to return to play. The team is expected to “review and/or design an appropriate plan for the student while he/she is recovering.”
The team will also regulate the student’s academic recovery with a return-to-school protocol, according to the paper. “The CMT members pertinent to the individual student’s academic needs will be contacted and notified of their medical status and any restrictions,” reads the policy.
