Walgreens to Make Available ‘Concussion Education’ at Take Care Clinics

With concussion rates in youth sports having increased dramatically over the past decade, select Walgreens “have introduced a new concussion education component as part of its annual camp, back-to-school and sports physicals, which are now available daily for just $39.”

Walgreens has Take Care Clinics at 370 of its locations, which have been providing physicals since 2006. The usual “camp, back-to-school and sports physicals, regularly $60, are available at the reduced price through Sept. 30 as part of a limited offer. Physicals are performed by board-certified nurse practitioners and in select locations physician assistants, and are routine health physical examinations for school-aged children.” Now, those routine physicals will be supplemented with “concussion education to help families prevent and recognize concussion symptoms, at no extra cost.”

By extending its services to include concussion education, parents now have the opportunity to have their children screened “for undetected health conditions, identify children that may be at risk for injury and provide important health and wellness information and advice,” according to Heather Helle, divisional vice president, Walgreens consumer solutions group.

Being aware of concussion symptoms and how to deal with them is crucial to avoiding long term consequences for today’s youth. Data collected by the American Journal of Sports Medicine reveals that “high school athletes sustain an estimated 300,000 concussions per year, and for young people ages 15 to 24 years old, sports are the second leading cause of traumatic brain injury behind automobile accidents.”

In addition to Take Care Clinics’ concussion education, “patients receive take-home materials with important information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).”
