If you need more evidence that concussions are having a massive impact in both high school and college athletics, look no further than Richy Klepal.
A 6-foot-5, 285-pound offensive tackle at Tampa Plant HighSchool, the senior informed his coaches and teammates Thursday that repeated concussions have forced him to quit playing.
Interestingly, Klepal committed to Florida State University earlier this summer and was expected to sign with the Seminoles in February.
Klepal told the Bright House Sports Network that his doctor told him that his brain “looked worse” than that of another of the doctor’s patients, “a retired NFL player who had 10 concussions.”
His high school coach elaborated, noting that “it wasn’t a matter of the number of concussions he’s had, it was a hemorrhage in his brain.”
He also reportedly told the media that FSU coach Jimbo Fisher will still honor the scholarship.
Such situations are not unprecedented.
Less than a decade ago, Austin (TX) Westlake High School senior lineman Matt Nader had committed to the University of Texas, when, that fall, he suffered a heart attack. While he could no longer play football, the school honored the scholarship.
