A high school football player died Monday night after sustaining a head injury in a helmet to helmet collision three nights earlier in a game.
The latest news begs the question: Are we seeing the same amount of concussions a decade ago that we are seeing today? Do we just notice them more?
Neither answer will save Damon W. Janes of Brocton, New York.
“The 16-year-old running back was transported to Olean General Hospital from Portville, then to Women & Children’s, after taking the helmet-to-helmet hit during the third quarter of a football game Friday night,” according to published accounts. “Janes reportedly lost consciousness after the hit. The game was called off after the injury.”
There were 25 fatal injuries to high school football players in the U.S. between 2003 and 2013, according to the Annual Survey of Football Injury Research prepared by the National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury Research at the University of North Carolina.
